A descendant from a long line of musicians, stretching from the underground concert halls of apartheid South Africa, Stella Explorer draws from her lineage, infusing her nocturnal torch songs with rhythms and arrangements indebted to the jazz music played in former shirt factories and on the airwaves of Radio Freedom.

Dorkay House is her debut EP. Named for the Johannesburg venue that served as a haven for black musicians during apartheid, the title is a reference to her lineage as well as to the power that lingers in places left behind. The photo on the cover was taken at her ex’s cabin, out in rural Sweden. As different as it is from Dorkay House, Stella ties them together as places “where everything once happened but will never happen again”.

Stella’s work thrives in those in-betweens, feeding on the still smoldering coals of fires long forgotten. From the themes of the album, to the out-of-joint love stories in her lyrics, even the sound of the 707 that drives every track, she has a talent for drawing flame from the stone, bringing an addictive vitality to the old, new and the yet-to-happen.
